Tom Stuart-Smith
Tom Stuart-Smith studied zoology at Cambridge University and then read Landscape Design at Manchester University. He has been practising as a landscape architect since 1984.
In 1998 he set up his own practice and has developed a reputation as a designer creating landscapes that are modern, elegant and have a strongly expressed naturalism.
Gardens recently completed include a number of large private gardens in the country. Several of these have been extensively published, Including Broughton Grange and Woodperry in Oxfordshire, Wycliffe Hall in County Durham, and a new garden at Windsor Castle commissioned by the Royal Household to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The BBC documentary film on the making of the garden, entitled “The Queens Jubilee Garden – The Designer’s Story”.
His recasting of the Italian garden at Trentham has been part of one of the largest and most acclaimed regeneration projects of an historic garden in recent years.
More recent work includes the 2 hectare garden around the Bicentenary Glasshouse at Wisley for the RHS, opened to the public by The Queen in June 2007.
In contrast to the large scale projects he has now made 7 Gold Medal winning gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show. The first was a baroque ‘Bosquet’ designed for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel in1998, This was followed by “Homage to Le Nôtre” in 2000 and a contemporary garden in 2001, both for Laurent-Perrier. His gardens for the same sponsor in 2003 and 2008 won Gold Medals and the awards for the best garden in the show, as did his garden for The Daily Telegraph in 2006.
A recent project on an even smaller scale is the Moon Terrace created at the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair. An evocation of landscape and natural process within a small, enclosed courtyard.
His work expresses the idea of the garden as a place that quietly articulates emotions and ideas, believing that the designer’s role is to set the scene without imposing a rigid narrative and that a garden should not bind us to a narrow vision. Rather the aim is to make places of imaginative possibility.
His studio is in Clerkenwell, London, but he lives and gardens in Hertfordshire from where writes occasionally for the Guardian Weekend Magazine.
